Enabling write protection on a Universal Serial Bus drive prevents users from adding, copying or deleting data from the device. If you've inserted a USB drive into your Microsoft Windows 7 computer and you can't save or transfer a document or file to the drive, another user may have enabled write protection. Some portable drives include a lock switch that protects the drive while it's in transit. If you've unlocked the switch on the device but still can't write to the drive, you'll need to unlock write protection with the Properties tool.
1. Insert the USB drive into a free port on the computer.
2. Click the "Start" button on the desktop taskbar. Select "Computer" from the Start menu. This displays the "Computer" folder that contains a list of all drives.
3. Right-click on the USB drive icon, then select "Properties" from the Context menu.
4. Click the "Security" tab on the
Properties dialog box. Click the
"Edit" button. This displays the USB
drive permissions in the pane in
the center of the dialog box.
5. Click and select your username
in the "Group and Usernames"
section.
Click and select the "Allow"
radio button beside both the "Full"
and "Write" settings in the
"Permissions for Authenticated Users" section.
6. Click the "Apply" button to save
the changes, then click "OK" to exit
the Properties dialog box. This
cancels write protection on the USB drive.
Tip
- You might need to enter your
- Windows administrator password
- in Step 5. On home computers, the
- administrator password is usually
- the same as the main user's
- Windows login password.
